Obaseki bows to pressure, meets Ijaw leaders
After several months of evading the real leaders of Egbema Ijaws in Delta and Ijaw leaders in Edo state over the recognition of the Ijaws in the Delta and Edo border towns, the Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki has finally yielded to pressure from the Ijaw leaders by meeting the leaders in the Delta Egbema on the need for dialogue.
Fielding questions from newsmen after coming out of a closed door meeting with the Ijaw leaders, governor Obaseki acknowledged the Ijaws as part of Edo people.
Some Ijaw national leaders who spoke maintained their stands on the letter to the governor which includes the recognition of the Ijaw traditional rulers in Edo state.
It will be recalled that the Ijaw leaders had two weeks ago addressed a press briefing dissociating themselves from the group that visited the governor in Benin, while also saying they are the genuine owners of the oil rich communities in Edo/Delta border towns.
