EDO: Youth Protest Aganist Massive Sack
About 12,000 workers under the Edo state Youth Employment Scheme (EDO YES) sacked yesterday by Governor Adams Oshiomole have taken to the streets to protest against the sack.
These sacked worker mostly graduate and unskilled workers employed by Governor Oshiomole in 2009 to reduce the teeming unemployed and starved of the wave of criminality.
Some of the aggrieved protesters who spoke to Galaxy tv news in Benin on their way to Government House, expressed pain over the sudden development which they claim will have a rippling effect on the society.
Over 1000 Sacked workers under the Youth Employment Scheme (YES) are groaning in pains as they troop out in large numbers to protest the phase out of the scheme under the Rapid Response Agency, which they say is a sack published in the state newspaper, according to the state government announcement yesterday, the civil service commission is putting in place arrangement to interview affected workers with a view to employing those qualified to fill vacant positions in the state civil service.
Some of the affected workers who had protested to government house were chase out by security operatives but the state Chairman of the youth employment scheme, Victor Idonijie, lamented the ill-treatment, accused the security operatives and the state governor of high handedness in his administration. Noting that police open fire on them while some sustained different degrees of injuries.
However Oronsaye, who faulted governor’s decision to phase out the scheme said he should have followed the way of other leaders who will reduce the number of political appointees or slash down their huge salary to accommodate those in the scheme.
The protesters who swarm to government to seek audience with the state governor were chase out according to the leader who narrated they were not given chance to air their views. It will be recalled that governor oshiomole on assumption of leadership promised to employ 10,000 unemployed but the case is now different.
