The Federal Government says it has no intentions to scrap the National Youth Service Scheme.

This assurance is coming in the wake of calls and debate on whether or not the scheme has met its establishment objectives.

Speaking at the launch of an NYSC movie, titled: A Call to Service, in Abuja at the weekend, the minister of sports and youth development, Sunday Dare, who gave the assurance explained that the scheme has impacted positively on the lives of the Nigerian youths and will not be scrapped

Dare maintained that the scheme has been more relevant than ever before and only needs the collaboration of government and stakeholders to make more impact.

Eulogizing the efforts of NYSC management, the minister said efforts are on, to establish a Trust Fund as a way of making it more efficient to deliver on its mandate.

NYSC Director-General, Shuaibu Ibrahim, said that the movie was produced to drive the relevance of the scheme and to provide a platform for corps members to develop their potentials.

General Ibrahim also said the movie will encourage local and foreign-trained Nigerian graduates that are eligible for national service to make themselves available upon graduation as well as prevent the graduates from being found guilty of absenteeism, absconding or certificate forgery.

Founder of the scheme and former head of state, Yakubu Gowon who was represented at the event, urged the executive and legislative arms of government to consider establishing the NYSC TRUST FUND.

This he said will ensure the sustenance of the scheme and the future of Nigerian youth.      

The high point of the event was the recognition of the movie cast and the unveiling of the movie itself.
