House moves to establish commission to combat arms proliferation
A bill for an Act to provide for the Establishment of National Commission against the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons, has passed second reading on the floor of the House Of Representatives.
The bill passed after debate led by the Chief Whip of the House, Honourable Mohammed Monguno.
It was a heated debate today at the green Chambers, where honorable members expressed grave concerns over the influx of Small Arms and Light Weapons into the country through the porous borders and ports.
Chief Whip of the house, Mohammed Monguno had sort consent of green chambers to establish the Commission, so as to coordinate and implement activities geared at combating challenges of weapon Proliferation within the country.
Lawmakers supported provisions of the bill, saying that the Commission would help Nigeria in combating insecurity and crimes, especially in the insurgency prone North-East geopolitical zone and the volatile borders.
The bill was referred to relevant committee for further legislative actions.
Before they adjourned Thursday’s plenary the lower chamber received other thirty bills which were read for the first time on the floor.
