Edo Civil Society Organisations Lament Disruption of Protest
A peaceful protest in Edo State by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CCSO) was today, disrupted in Benin by Public Works Volunteers agents of the Edo State Governments.
The protesters, who addressed members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the council secretariat in Benin, alleged that they were attacked based on the allegation that the protest was against the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Edo State former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Osagie Obayuwana called for the disbandment of the Public Works Volunteers.
On his part, the chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists Edo state council commended the protesters for their conduct.
When contacted, the head Public works volunteer Muktari denied that his men disrupted the protest, saying the State Government encourages everyone to protest as part of their legitimate right, but it must be done in a way as not to undermine the security of the State
